"Martyr!" By: Kaveh Akbar
Kaveh Akbar’s “Martyr!” is a novel that explores the tension between sacrifice and self-destruction through vivid, fragmented imagery. The poem weaves together elements of the poet’s Iranian heritage and Muslim background with his experiences in America, examining what it means to give oneself up for a cause or belief. Through intimate, lyrical language, Akbar contemplates the nature of martyrdom as both a religious concept and a personal metaphor for transformation, creating a meditation on identity, faith, and the price of devotion.

Vicky's - West Adams
I honestly thought of gatekeeping this one. So when I describe this restaurant as passing all the checkboxes for what I look for when I’m eating, this place has it.
The setting is euro-inspired, with notes of mixing a wine bar and a cafe in a sunny room during the afternoon and a dim ambiance towards the evening.
When it comes to food, this restaurant doesn’t play when it comes to both presentation and taste. There’s a variety of dishes to satisfy all types of eaters, taking inspiration from Mediterranean, Italian, and New American cuisine. What the menu details you’ll be having, it emphasizes once eaten. The Aleppo Lemon Chicken, for instance, sounded solid on paper, but once in front of me, there were notes of fresh lemon in every bite without ever becoming overbearing. The hummus plate was beautiful, fresh, and filling, and if you know me well, you know I can critique hummus.
With moderate prices that meet quality, portion, and presentation, I highly suggest everyone check this place out!
